Soma Cube

The Soma Cube was invented by Piet Hein when he was doodling during a lecture. It’s a solid dissection puzzle whose main form is a 3×3x3 cube.

There are 240 distinct ways to assemble the 7 pieces into a cube and many more if you count reflections and rotations. Even so, it might not be as easy to reassemble as you might think.

There are a lot of resources on the net that can tell you more about this puzzle.

The puzzles we make are made from hardwoods like oak, maple, walnut, and cherry. We also have exotic (non-domestic) hardwoods available.

We start with pieces of wood that we then cut down into strips about 3/4″ square and the length of the original wood source. That is then cut into 3/4″ squares and the 7 pieces are assembled with wood glue. The assembled cube pieces are then sanded down and a finish is applied. Which finish depends on the wood, but all are non-toxic once they’ve dried. We use penetrating oils to finish such as a modified tung oil that absorb into the surface and protect and enhance the appearance.

We keep natural woods in stock, but we can provide custom cubes that use, for example, school colors.

All our puzzles come in a hardwood box and have a small insert that tells a little bit about the puzzle and where you can go to find more information.
