A Saturday afternoon making puzzles

Well, I was out in the garage cutting up the remainder of our prepared wood. About time to go out and pick up some more material. I cut up some walnut, a stick of maple, and a little bit of cherry.

I also worked out how to make the boxes. The 45 degree router bit makes the edges really clean and all I need is a bit of blue tape to “clamp” it all together until it dries. Currently we’re having a discussion on how to finish the boxes – whether to do something wild and crazy, make a signature box or to be more sedate. Stay tuned for that one.

I’m also working on a sled, a jig to ensure that my wood processing stays consistent. When it’s done it will, essentially, give me a zero clearance cut that’s flat on the bottom – not something I can do on my table saw right now. All I need to do is to find the drill so I can put in a couple of opening holes for the tool slots. Turns out my small drill press doesn’t have enough throat clearance to get the center two 3/4″ holes. It’s the first time I’ve wished for a bigger drill press as it normally serves me very well.

We now have 6 maple and 8 cherry soma cubes completed and 26 more maple ones ready to have the finish put on them. As Cher says, she’s done 5 of 7 on the Borg cube. All the small cubes are cut and assembled, she just likes to do the finish by type instead of by soma cube.

At this rate we’ll be done in plenty of time and we’ll be able to continue on with the commercial side of all this. The more we do them, the better they get and the less time it takes. We’ll have quite a variety of puzzles available once we’re done with the push for the Section B soma cubes.

I’m thinking that we need to include something in the package that says these were crafted specifically for the Section B wrap movie. That way they’ll bring more on EBay after the movie wins an Oscar :)
